Drought, high food prices and the conflicts in the area are resulting as an unprecedented disaster that occurred in the summer of 2011. At its worst, more than two million children suffer from malnutrition. Child malnutrition has now begun to fall, but help is still needed.

It was the worst food crisis in Africa in twenty years. Record drought, food price increases and the conflicts in the area will affect at least next summer millions of people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti.

This situation relates specifically to children, who are quickly taken over by the malnutrition and they lose resistance to disease. Even if these children survive, childhood malnutrition can leave permanent damage to their mental and physical development. More than two million children under five years old suffer from acute malnutrition, of whom 75 percent were located in Southern Somalia.
