GDIN Academia Working Group

One point. Thanks for the email. The GDIN Conference Commmittee does the actual annual GDIN Conference. Your paper proposes an Academic Conference, which is a good idea; but it needs to be clear in purpose, separate from the Annual GDIN Conference, which will be held in Rome in late June 2002. You might also consider consulting or inviting the attached list of academics. I also need your comments on the draft agenda for GDIN2002.

GDIN Conference Steering Committee:

I have heard from most of you now and everyone has accepted as being on the committee. We are charged with developing and implementating an international conference to help develop "An Agenda for the Future of Emergency Management". The attached concept paper is my first very rough draft of a concept paper that we can use to help sell the idea to various agencies to get funding and their agreement to participate. I need your comments. Please feel free to tear it appart, to delete it and start over, to reorganize it, add to it or what ever you want to do to help improve the product. I have thick skin so you will not offend me if you think I am way off line with this draft. Please try to get comments back to me and I will prepare a second draft.

In addition, we need to start to assembly agencies, foundations, corporations, governments and other groups that might want to participate and that could help fund the conference. I am guessing we will need $25,000 to $50,000 to get this thing done well. Please give me any names and contacts that I can include in an invitation list and that we could contact about funding.

In addition, I have the following ideas that I did not put into the paper but I would like to get your responses:

  1. Can we do most or all of this as a WEB conference?
  2. Should we try to have regional conferences? For example, the Americas; Asia/Pacific; Europe/Africa.
  3. Would it be good to have one live conference with regional conferences on the WEB?
  4. What "hook" do we have to engage the funding agencies, foundations, governments, and corporations?
  5. Any ideas on who would be good to develop and deliver state-of-the-art papers for the conference?
  6. Other ideas..
  7. I look forward to hearing from you as soon as you can...
